Pyjama days

There is nothing nice than being snuggled up indoors in really comfortable clothing, with nothing to do but relax, and no need to get dressed and leave the house. Pyjama days are not just for children, they are a great way of taking time out from the busy, hectic, schedule of modern life and just enjoying the simple things in life.

During this particularly stressful time, it is really important that we all take the time to look after our mental health, and the mental health of those around us, and scheduling a pyjama day is a great way to do this.

What is a pyjama day?

You might have heard the term pyjama day but never actually had one. The idea is simple. You stay in your pyjamas all day, relaxing in your home, with no plans and no need to even leave the house. It is not the same as spending all day in your pyjamas because you are not well.

Some people like to spend pyjama days curled up on the sofa with their children watching films, eating popcorn, and drinking hot chocolate. For other families it might mean a day of board games or even a day spent building Lego models; anything goes.

National pyjama day

You might be surprised to learn that there is in fact a national pyjama day, a specific date dedicated to spending the entire day in your pyjamas. Here in the UK that date is 17th July, so mark it in your diaries for next year. Other countries also have national pyjama days as well although they mark the occasion at other times of the year.

There is also a national pyjama week here in the UK which is organised by The Children’s Trust as a fundraiser and takes place at the beginning of October.

What can you do on a pyjama day?

There are plenty of activities that you can do during a pyjama day. The main goal is to stay comfy and cosy whilst having a day off from it all. If you have young children then it can be a good idea to get them involved in planning how you should spend your pyjama day. After all, even though you are relaxing you probably don’t want to spend all day watching the television.

Board games can be fun for the whole family so why not set aside a couple of hours to play some games that are suitable for everyone in the family to enjoy. If your children are young, then you might want to team up and have a “competition”.

Perhaps you could get involved in playing with your children’s favourite toy or make-believe game. Whether this means setting up the wooden train track so it takes over your lounge, or creating imaginary monsters with the Lego, there is something very therapeutic about returning to the simpler things of childhood, even if it is only for a day.

Finish your pyjama day with a family film and hot chocolate. Just don’t forget to change into fresh pyjamas for bed so that you have a nice comfortable night’s rest.

How much sleep do babies and children need?


How much sleep do babies and children need?

If you join any parenting forum out there then you are likely to see a huge amount of threads along the lines of: “My baby sleeps too much”, “My baby never sleeps” and “how much sleep should my toddler be having?” You will also see a huge range of answers from other parents, some with several children and some who have just had their first. While we have already touched on the subject in our How much sleep do I need article, here we will take a look at the recommended hours of sleep babies and toddlers need for good development and how you can help them to achieve that.

Sleep is essential for healthy development and according to research by the National Sleep Foundation a child spends around 40% of their childhood sleeping. The table below gives their recommendations for how much sleep your child should be getting.

0-3 months 16-17 hours
4-11 months 14-15 hours
12-24 months 11-14 hours
3-5 years 11-13 hours
6-13 years 9-11 hours
Teens 8-9 hours


Newborns and sleep (0-3 months)

Sleep during the first 3 months of life takes place pretty much around the clock, as any new parent will tell you. Babies tend to stick to a sleep-wake cycle that only changes when the need feeding or changing. In the first few weeks, it may in fact seem like your baby is rarely awake. This is normal, as being born is an exhausting experience and they will be busy growing which takes a considerable amount of energy. It is important to look out for your baby’s cues that they are tired so that you can help them to get into a sleep routine. Put them in their cot whilst they are sleepy but not sleeping in order to help them learn about sleep. Babies usually sleep as much as 16-17 hours at this stage.

Infants and sleep (4-11 months)

By the time your baby is 6 months old, you will have begun to introduce solid foods. However, milk is still their primary food source and they may still require feeding in the night. This is still normal. Sleep will have reduced, and you will have noticed patterns for naps and overnight sleep. Your infant may be napping for between 30 minutes to 2 hours as often as 4 times during the day, and sleeping at night for around 9-12 hours, it really depends on your baby. A good sleep routine should have begun to take shape, and you may have begun to gently sleep train your child by putting them in their cot when it approaches nap time and they are sleepy. Your infant should be sleeping around 14-15 hours a day.

Toddlers and sleep (12-24 months)

Your toddler will be becoming much more active during this period, and will probably have started walking at some point. Some toddlers may prefer longer naps and shorter nights, while other will power nap and the sleep longer overnight. Child sleep really does vary from one child to another. By the time they are around 18 months, they may drop a nap and only nap for between 1-3 hours during the day. It is a good idea to ensure that this doesn’t happen close to bedtime otherwise they will not sleep. They may begin to struggle with sleep issues such as night terrors (more information can be found in our ‘Common sleep problems for children and babies’ blog). You may find introducing sleep training clocks helpful at this stage to help with early waking. You toddler will need around 11-14 hours of sleep in total over a period of 24 hours.

Preschoolers and sleep (3-5 years)

Once your child reaches the age of 5, they will probably have dropped all naps. Any naps that do occur will usually coincide with a busy day out and a car trip home or illness. They may also experience more issues falling asleep at bedtime and they may wake in the night. There are some big developmental milestones that your child will be reaching at this point which can set their imaginations racing. Sleepwalking is not uncommon during the preschool years. Your pre-schooler should be sleeping for between 11-13 hours.

School aged children and sleep (6-13)

Children in this age group have more demands on their time with school, sports and playing out with friends. They can also be more interested in the television and electronics. These can disrupt their sleep so ensure that bedtime is a gadget-free time and implement a ban on gadgets for an hour before bedtime. Bedrooms should be dark cool and quiet so no tvs in the room either. You child may also experience more anxieties which can make getting to sleep harder. They should be sleeping between 9-11 hours per night.

Teenagers and sleep

Teen sleep should last for around 8-9 hours a day. As any parent who has teenagers will tell you, they try to stay up late, are dead to the world in the morning when you need them to wake up and could sleep all day if you let them. Try and stick to a good routine – taming a lion might be easier though!

If you’re concerned about your child not getting enough sleep, then it could be a good idea to speak to your health visitor or GP to air your concerns. They will be able to give you advice on what to do about any sleep problems your child may be experiencing.

100 % Cotton

When it comes to clothing, cotton is an incredibly popular choice. However, many people are confused when it comes to labelling on garments and whilst they may think that they are purchasing something that is made of cotton what they may actually end with is a cotton blend.

Read on to discover exactly what 100% cotton really is, how it is made into material and what the benefits of this incredibly eco-friendly choice are.

What is it?

When the label on a garment you are looking at says 100% cotton, this means that the fabric is not a blended one but one that is made of softer, stronger natural cellulosic fibres as they are picked from the cotton plant. The amount of cotton that has been used in the fabric is pure and has not been blended with any other fibre, no matter how small the percentage.

This should not be confused with the term pure cotton which may well be blended with other fibres – in this case the term pure is used only to refer to the quality of the cotton in the item and not the percentage.

How is the material created?

In order to make 100% cotton material, the cotton must first be harvested. This is then cleaned, and all of the seeds and bits are removed. The resulting pure cotton fibre is then taken to a textile production facility. Here, the raw cotton is carded – a process during which the smaller cotton fibres are transformed into longer ones. These longer strands are then spun to create yarn. Dye is introduced to the cotton at this point if required and then it is finally woven into fabric that can be used for garments or linens for the home.

What are the benefits of 100% cotton?

One of the most popular natural fibres in the world, there are a number of benefits to be had from using cotton. Primarily it is popular for its ability to insulate, control moisture and offer comfort. It is however also a hypoallergenic fibre that is exceptionally durable and also weatherproof. Cotton makes great clothing it is a highly breathable fabric that allows moisture to be wicked away from the body, so it is good for use in both colder and warmer temperatures.

It is this wicking property together with the comfort that it offers the wearer that makes 100% cotton the perfect choice for night attire for any age group. It allows the wearer to get a good night’s sleep without getting too hot or too cold.

Buyers guide to purchasing pyjamas for kids age 0-7


Sleep is so important to the development of children, so it is really important to ensure that they are comfortable in bed. Being comfortable will help them to get a good night’s sleep which in turn will help them with the important stages of their growth and development, both physical and developmentally. This means ensuring that not only are their rooms a good temperature. Experts recommend that a safe sleeping temperature for a child is between 18 and 22 degrees. However, aside from this you need to make sure that they have comfortable sleepwear.

What size should I choose?

There are so many choices out there when it comes to sleepwear for children, so it is important to make sure that you buy the right thing. Many high street companies measure their children’s clothing by the age of a child, but as any mother will tell you, children often don’t follow this particular set of “rules”. It is often better to look for pyjamas that are sold using height as an indicator, as this will give you a much better fit.

In order to get the best size, begin by measuring the height of your child. Our pyjamas run from 90cm to 140cm with sizes increasing by increments of 10cm. If your child is between 2 sizes, you may prefer to size up, as children can have sudden growth spurts.

What material should I choose?

100% cotton is the perfect choice for children’s nightwear. It is comfortable, lovely, and soft against the skin and breathable. A more synthetic fabric may become hot and uncomfortable overnight resulting in a poor night’s sleep.

It also washes incredibly well; an important consideration for any parent when picking clothes for their child. All of our children’s pyjamas are machine washable for this very reason.

The weather is very changeable, and therefore so is the temperature, so keep this in mind when purchasing. Some pyjamas are heavier and great for winter whilst others are lighter and more suited to spring and summer.

Signs your child isn’t getting enough quality sleep


Whether your child is a baby, a toddler or even a teenager, getting the right amount of healthy, good quality sleep is essential. Inadequate sleep, including snoozing that is low-quality, can be a potential threat to healthy growth and development. Poor levels of low-quality sleep in children has also been linked to several other serious conditions including obesity, behaviour problems and high-risk activities.

What should you look out for?

If you believe that your child is not getting enough sleep, these are some of the things that might indicate this in fact correct:

  • Your child has trouble waking up in the morning
  • They are very irritable
  • They might seem overly moody and emotional
  • They could be hyperactive
  • They have difficulty concentrating in school
  • Staying awake during the day is an issue

In younger children and babies, they may also exhibit the following:

  • Being cranky and whiny particularly in the late afternoon, they may also try to nap incredibly late in the day very close to bedtime
  • They can be clingy and need constant attention
  • They may become untalkative, fidgety or even hyperactive in their behaviour
  • Have difficulty taking turns or sharing – more than is normal for a young child
  • They may fall asleep immediately on waking
  • They may fall asleep during short car journeys

If you have spotted signs of sleep deficit in your child then there are some things that you can do in order to help them improve the amount of sleep that they get so that they can be at their best both at school and at home.

Routine, routine, routine

It really can’t be emphasised just how important it is to establish a good sleep routine whilst your baby is younger. Good sleep habits early on in life will help later down the line by establishing the basics.

Make sure that your child’s room is comfortable. This means it should be neither too hot nor too cold, if their room is quite bright consider black out blinds or curtains which will help to make it darker and easier to sleep in. Comfortable night attire is also something you should consider. Pyjamas should not be too tight at the cuffs or around the neck and should be made from natural fibres which can help to regulate body temperature and which your child is also less likely to have a reaction to. Many babies shuffle in their sleep and lose their covers, causing them to get cold and wake up. This can be avoided by using baby sleeping bags or gro bags which keep them covered all night long.
